Estimated pollutant load from Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP, Brazil)
2021 - SILVA, TATIANE B. de S.C. da; OLIVEIRA, CINTIA C. de; MARQUES, JOYCE R.; FAUSTINO, MAINARA G.; STELLATO, THAMIRIS B.; MONTEIRO, LUCILENA R.; PIRES, MARIA A.F.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.
The quantification of the pollutant load received by a water body is one necessary step to keep its original standards, irrespective of the releasing source. Thus, to monitor and control the content of pollutants released in a water body assures the water will remain free from excessive pollution. Also, no harm to human health and the environment will occur. Hence, this paper aims to estimate the pollutant load of sanitary wastewater released by the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN / CNEN-SP) in 2015 and 2016. The analysis of Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ba, Ni, Mn, Fe, B, and Sn was performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). These metals and the total fixed solids were used to estimate the pollutant load. Wastewater flow measurement was carried out using bromide (Br-) as a tracer and with the values from IPEN`s annual water consumption. Since 2006, this is performed as part of the Environmental Monitoring Program (PMA-Q), in compliance with the current Brazilian Environmental Legislation and with the Term of Conduct Adjustment requirements, agreed with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA). Even the pollutants load has increased in 2015 and 2016, the monitoring frequency and water consumption have diminished in the last years. These facts increase the uncertainties in the monitoring and could lead to non-compliances with the monitoring laws.

2019 - SILVA, TATIANE B. de S.C. da; OLIVEIRA, CINTIA C. de; MARQUES, JOYCE R.; FAUSTINO, MAINARA G.; STELLATO, THAMIRIS B.; MONTEIRO, LUCILENA R.; PIRES, MARIA A.F.; CONTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.
Quantifying the pollutant load in a receiving water body is one of the needed steps to keep its original standards, irrespective of its releases source. Monitoring, and thus, controlling the amount of pollutants to be destined to the water body means ensuring water quality, keeping it free of excessive pollution and harm to human health and the environment. Hence, this paper aims to estimate the pollutant load of sanitary wastewater released by the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN / CNEN-SP) during 2015 and 2016. The assay of Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ba, Ni, Mn, Fe, B and Sn were performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and As, Hg and Se by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GF-AAS). The metals and total fixed solids pollutant load estimative carried out, employed wastewater flow measurement, using bromide (Br- ) as tracer and the annual water consumption at IPEN. This evaluation is performed annually by IPEN since 2006 as part of the Environmental Monitoring Program (PMA-Q), in order to comply with the current environmental legislation and the Term of Adjustment of Conduct requirements, agreed with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).

Top down arsenic uncertainty measurement in water and sediments from Guarapiranga dam (Brazil)
    2018 - FAUSTINO, M.G.; LANGE, C.N.; MONTEIRO, L.R.; FURUSAWA, H.A.; MARQUES, J.R.; STELLATO, T.B.; SOARES, S.M.V.; SILVA, T.B.S.C. da; SILVA, D.B. da; COTRIM, M.E.B.; PIRES, M.A.F.
Total arsenic measurements assessment regarding legal threshold demands more than average and standard deviation approach. In this way, analytical measurement uncertainty evaluation was conducted in order to comply with legal requirements and to allow the balance of arsenic in both water and sediment compartments. A top-down approach for measurement uncertainties was applied to evaluate arsenic concentrations in water and sediments from Guarapiranga dam (São Paulo, Brazil). Laboratory quality control and arsenic interlaboratory tests data were used in this approach to estimate the uncertainties associated with the methodology.

Total metals in stormwater runoff at the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN), São Paulo – Brazil
2017 - FAUSTINO, MAINARA G.; MONTEIRO, LUCILENA R.; SILVA, TATIANE B. de S.C. da; STELLATO, THAMIRIS B.; SOARES, SABRINA M.V.; MARQUES, JOYCE R.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.; PIRES, MARIA A.F.
Stormwater quality allows to evaluate if any pollutants load happens within its runoff. This work aims stormwater temporal and spatial profile characterization to assess environmental risk and to identify chemical tracers. Thus, a specific collector was built to sample collection, with four separate PVC tubes, and the collector allowed single event temporal and sequential evaluation, as long as each compartment was fulfilled. The collector was installed in the runoff direction in order to have maximum collection volume. Two collections were carried out in summer (January 2017) at two IPEN stations, in urban areas. Total metals analysis were performed, in addition to physicochemical data, such as pH, temperature and conductivity. The results had aluminum, iron and manganese present, and some elements, such as zinc, had a temporal distribution, with a decrease concentration within the collected volume. The preliminary results have as objective to assist the studies of urban water management.

Guarapiranga dam (São Paulo-SP/Brazil) nitrogen distribution
    2017 - SILVA, D.B.; SILVA, T.B.S.C.; MONTEIRO, L.R.; FAUSTINO, M.G.; MARQUES, J.R.; STELLATO, T.B.; SOARES, S.M.V.; PIRES, M.A.F.; COTRIM, M.E.B.
Nowadays Guarapiranga Dam is responsible for about 20% of Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP) water supply. However, since the 60s an irregular and disordered occupation appears in the area. From the 70’s, the reservoir was reported eutrophic due to untreated urban sewage. Cyanobacteria blooms were frequent since 1990. Nitrogen species are a significant part of this eutrophication problem. In this scenario, the present work presents the distributions of nitrogen species in the Guarapiranga Dam, to compare with other lakes and reservoirs status in the world and to find options to this nutrient management in Guarapiranga Reservoir.
