Microscale Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) for interstitial water of estuarine sediments affected by multiple sources of pollution
2022 - ALVES, ALINE V.; FERRAZ, MARIANA A.; MORENO, BEATRIZ B.; NOBRE, CAIO R.; ANTUNES, RENATA M.; PUSCEDDU, FABIO H.; BORDON, ISABELLA C. da C.L.; FAVARO, DEBORAH I.T.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.; CHOUERI, RODRIGO B.
Estuaries in the world are affected by different contamination sources related to urbanisation and port/industrial activities. Identifying the substances responsible for the environmental toxicity in estuaries is challenging due to the multitude of stressors, both natural and anthropogenic. The Toxicity Identification and Evaluation (TIE) is a suitable way of determining causes of toxicity of sediments, but it poses difficulties since its application is labour intensive and time consuming. The aimof this study is to evaluate the diagnosis provided by a TIE based on microscale embryotoxicity tests with interstitial water (IW) to identify toxicants in estuarine sediments affected by multiple stressors. TIE showed toxicity due to different combinations of metals, apolar organic compounds, ammonia and sulphides, depending on the contamination source closest to the sampling station. The microscale TIE was able to discern different toxicants on sites subject to different contamination sources. There is good agreement between the results indicated in the TIE and the chemical analyses in whole sediment, although there are some disagreements, either due to the sensitivity of the test used, or due to the particularities of the use of interstitial water to assess the sediment toxicity. The improvement of TIE methods focused on identifying toxicants in multiple-stressed estuarine areas are crucial to discern contamination sources and subsidise management strategies.

Application of the fundamental parameter method to the assessment of major and trace elements in soil and sediments from Osamu Utsumi uranium mine by WDXRF
    2019 - GUILHEN, SABINE N.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.; SAKATA, SOLANGE K.; SCAPIN, MARCOS A.
Wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF) is a suitable technique for the characterization of contaminated mining sites, providing a quick and reliable screening for areas of significant contamination. This study established and validated a non-destructive methodology for quantitative simultaneous determination of major and minor constituents in soil and sediments by WDXRF, which was further applied to quantify soil and sediment samples from Osamu Utsumi uranium mine (Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil). Elements such as Ce, La, Nd, Mn and U were found in more concentrated levels in the calcium diuranate deposit (DUCA), whereas Fe and Al were found at higher levels in the soil samples corresponding to sites where accentuated leaching processes have occurred. Comparatively, the levels of U and rare-earth elements were found in significantly higher levels in the sediments retrieved from the mine’s pit as a result of acid mine drainage. These findings are believed to be useful as an initial environmental assessment for the decommissioning process of the mine.

Top down arsenic uncertainty measurement in water and sediments from Guarapiranga dam (Brazil)
    2018 - FAUSTINO, M.G.; LANGE, C.N.; MONTEIRO, L.R.; FURUSAWA, H.A.; MARQUES, J.R.; STELLATO, T.B.; SOARES, S.M.V.; SILVA, T.B.S.C. da; SILVA, D.B. da; COTRIM, M.E.B.; PIRES, M.A.F.
Total arsenic measurements assessment regarding legal threshold demands more than average and standard deviation approach. In this way, analytical measurement uncertainty evaluation was conducted in order to comply with legal requirements and to allow the balance of arsenic in both water and sediment compartments. A top-down approach for measurement uncertainties was applied to evaluate arsenic concentrations in water and sediments from Guarapiranga dam (São Paulo, Brazil). Laboratory quality control and arsenic interlaboratory tests data were used in this approach to estimate the uncertainties associated with the methodology.

Toxic elements in sediment from two water bodies near Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor – RMB installation area
2017 - SILVA, TATIANE B.S.C. da; STELLATO, THAMIRIS B.; MONTEIRO, LUCILENA R.; MARQUES, JOYCE R.; FAUSTINO, MAINARA G.; SANTOS, CAMILA F.R.T.T.; OLIVEIRA, CINTIA C. de; MIRANDA, GABRIELLE S.; PIRES, MARIA A.F.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.
Aquatic ecosystems are directly affected by contaminants, such as, toxic elements that do not remain in sediment in a insoluble form. Anthropogenic and natural actions influence sediment dynamics that could lead to a potential contaminant accumulation. Therefore, to evaluate possible environmental impacts is,in many cases, mandatory. Environmental impact assessment studies are a licensing toolthat seeks to control degradation activities, taking into account the legal and regulatory provisions and technical standards applicable to the case. The present study aims to evaluate the sediment quality in the area of influence of the Brazilian Multipurpose Nuclear Reactor (RMB) to be installed in the contiguous area of the Experimental Center of Aramar of the Technological Center of the Navy in São Paulo (CTMSP), located in the city of Iperó - SP. The potentially toxic elements As, Cd and Hg were analyzed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS) and Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results were compared with Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) guideline values (TEL and PEL) and the maximum permitted values of Resolution 454/12. These toxic elements (As, Cd, Hg, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn) were found below maximum allowed concentrations from national and international legislation. This study provides support for RMB post-completion evaluations, in order to prevent these elements to exceed tolerated levels, ensuring ecological, social and economic values.

Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment samples of Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor (RMB) installation area
    2017 - SILVA, JULIANA C.; MARTINS, ELAINE A.J.; COTRIM, MARYCEL E.B.; PIRES, MARIA A.F.
RMB will be a nuclear reactor for research and production of radioisotopes. Its applications extend to agriculture, industry and the environment. With the changes that will occur in the study area by its construction, the flow of vehicles will increase. It is known that one of the largest anthropogenic sources of PAHs is from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass. The aim of this research was to identify and quantify 14 of the 16 majorities PAHs in the sediment samples at RMB installations area in a period before the enterprise construction, June 2017, using the methodology developed and validated by Brito, 2009. It was observed individual concentrations from 0.05 to 1.11 μg g-1 in this first evaluation indicating that, although were found some PAHs concentrations above the established values by CONAMA and CETESB, this area still remains preserved. Pyrene was the compound that had the highest concentrations at different collecting points (1.11±0.03 and 1.09±0.02 μg g-1). Although were observed some PAHs concentrations above the established values by CONAMA and CETESB, the area is preserved. The study will provide previous information on PAHs concentrations in the area of the enterprise, providing information for the environmental impact study after the construction of the enterprise.
