PVGA/Alginate-AgNPs hydrogel as absorbent biomaterial and its soil biodegradation behavior
    2020 - ESTRADA-VILLEGAS, G.M.; MORSELLI, G.; OLIVEIRA, M.J.A.; GONZALEZ-PEREZ, G.; LUGAO, A.B.
PVGA, silver nitrate ( AgNO3) and alginate (Alg) were cross-linked by using γ-ray radiation to obtain Alg/PVGA/AgNPs as a potential biomaterial. The hydrogel composition was characterized by several analytics methods, and the morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling behavior was tested in different mediums. The stability of AgNPs was followed by UV–Vis at 400 nm for 1 month. The hydrogel soil biodegradation was analyzed by visual observation, weight loss, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis for 120 days. A simple biodegradation mechanism has been proposed based on results. Additionally, cytotoxicity assays were carried out using NCTC 929 cells to observe cell viability.

Synthesis of polymeric gels crosslinked by ionizing radiation for treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis
2019 - OLIVEIRA, MARIA J.A. de; MOREIRA, EDSON G.; SALVADOR, PABLO A.V.; ALCANTARA, MARA T.S.; LUGAO, ADEMAR B.
Ionizing radiation is a very efficient, versatile and clean tool for modifying polymers for various applications, including in the biomedical area. The advantages of using radiation include the ability to process materials in any physical form, at a convenient temperature, often at room temperature. There is no need for the use of initiators or other chemicals and it is easily carried out with high reliability and does not generate any waste. In the research support area, several materials have been treated in order to find correlations between the applied dose and some property of the material susceptible to be modified with gamma radiation. This study proposes the development of polymeric gels (cream) with Glucantime (Sb V) and gel (cream) with silver nanoparticles, for alternative treatment of cutaneous Leishmaniasis. A cobalt-60 gamma irradiation source was used for crosslinking the polymers, forming the silver nanoparticles and simultaneous sterilization, leaving the product ready for use. Polymeric gels were characterized by physico-chemical techniques, instrumental nêutron activation analysis (INAA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Synthesis and characterization of polymeric hydrogel containing caffeine for cosmeceutical applications
    2017 - SANTOS, TIAGO C.; OLIVEIRA, MARIA J.A.; LUGAO, ADEMAR B.
Caffeine, a substance with belongs to the group of methylxanthines, is alkaloids that penetrate in the human epidermis but is not easily absorbed into the bloodstream. With a dermatological active substance, it exerts action on the subcutaneous adipose tissue causing adipocyte lipolysis through the inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Based on these considerations, the objective of this study was to investigate the behavior of caffeine in a polymeric hydrogel matrix, for possible cosmeceutical applications. The hydrogels were cross-linked and sterilized by colbat-60 source gamma irradiation. In the characterization, were used thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was possible to observe by SEM the presence of crystals in the hydrogel sample. The DSC experiment confirmed a crystallinity of the sample and that caffeine is not degraded by gamma irradiation at 25 kGy. The results were satisfactory, allowing a new investigations that certify the benefits of its application.
