Development of an integrated condition monitoring system for motor-operated valves for Brazilian Nuclear Power Plants
    2001 - CARNEIRO, A.L.G.; SILVA, A.A.; PERRENOUD, H.G.; CUNHA, A.R.; UPADHYAYA, B.R.
Motor operated valves (MOV's) are widely used in industry to control fluid flow in various applications. In nuclear power systems they are especially crucial for the safe operation of plants and are applied extensively in safety related systems. Condition-based maintenance of MOV's avoids unexpected outages and prevents unnecessary maintenance procedures. Therefore, maintenance programs are being implemented based on the ability to diagnose modes of degradation and to take measures to prevent incipient failures, improving plant reliability and reducing maintenance costs. The basic idea of this paper is to present a research project that consists of developing an integrated system for diagnosis and conditioning monitoring of MOV that are used in Angra I and Angra II Brazilian Nuclear Power Plants operated by Eletronuclear Company. The methodology used in this research is the motor power signature analysis during open-to-close and close-to-open stroke time. The system is based on three modules and a database. The first module is the SignatureCollector that basically imports the motor power signature of the valve and inserts it in the database with information on the measured valve. The second module is the SignatureAnalyzer that consists in the application of different techniques for analysis of anomalies, such as an expert system capable to do inferences based on fuzzy logic, multi-resolution wavelet transform, and trending analysis. The third module, SystemManager, is used for reporting consultation and parameters alteration on database, in other words, the user interface. Finally the database is responsible for storing the power signatures, any important data related to the valve, the reports generated by the SignatureAnalyzer and the parameters of each one of the modules, including those pertinent to the different techniques of analysis. The system is being conceived using the object-oriented model that detaches the program to be implemented in a peculiar language. This is very important from the point of view of the application because it makes possible to the modules be implemented using different programming languages and different techniques. The database is based on the relational model. Perhaps the most important point of this model is the integrity that he provides, under two different aspects: data integrity and transaction integrity The test and validation are being performed using data from operating pressurized water reactor plants and bench test MOV data.
