Artigo IPEN-doc 22310 Mercury and methylmercury in the children hair and fish mostly consumed in Cubatão, São Paulo state, Brazil2014 - FARIAS, LUCIANA A.; FAVARO, DEBORAH I.T.; OLIVEIRA, PAULO T.M.S.; BRAGA, ELISABETE de S.Artigo IPEN-doc 20599 Selenium status and hair mercury levels in riverine children from Rondônia, Amazonia2014 - ROCHA, ARIANA V.; CARDOSO, BARBARA R.; COMINETTI, CRISTIANE; BUENO, RAFAEL B.; BORTOLI, MARITSA C. de; FARIAS, LUCIANA A.; FAVARO, DEBORAH I.T.; CAMARGO, LUIS M.A.; COZZOLINO, SILVIA M.F.Objective: Riverine communities in Rondo ˇ nia State are exposed to high selenium (Se) content in their diet because of the high-selenium soils identified in the Amazon. However, the Amazonian population has a high mercury (Hg) exposure because this metal accumulates in the soil. Because children are more vulnerable to Hg toxicity, the aim of this study was to evaluate and correlate Se status and hair Hg levels in riverine children (aged 3–9 y) living in two different locations in Rondo ˇ nia State: Demarcac¸ ao area (DA) and Gleba do Rio Preto (GRP). ~ Methods: Se levels were assessed using hydride generation quartz tube atomic absorption spectroscopy; total hair Hg levels were assessed using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Dietary intake was evaluated through a 24-h food record and a food frequency questionnaire. Results: Forty-two children participated in this study. Eighty-four percent of the children from DA showed low plasma Se. Conversely, all children from GRP presented plasma Se levels above the reference values. Forty-five percent of the children from DA presented low erythrocyte levels, and 55% of the children from GRP showed concentration in erythrocyte above the reference values. The mean Se intake was 41.8 mg/d in DA and 179.0 mg/d in GRP. High hair Hg levels were observed in children from both the DA and GRP (3.57 1.86 and 6.24 5.89, respectively). Conclusions: Children from both riverine communities are likely to present altered Se status according to their dietary intake. Additionally, these children are highly exposed to Hg, mainly through fish consumption, and the toxicity of this metal may cause metabolic damage.Artigo IPEN-doc 16370 Cooking process evaluation on mercury content in fish2010 - FARIAS, LUCIANA A.; FAVARO, DEBORAH I.; SANTOS, JOSE O.; VASCONCELLOS, MARINA B.; PESSOA, ARTEMIZA; AGUIAR, JAIME P.L.; YUYAMA, LUCIAThis study evaluated different cooking processes (roasted, cooked and fried) on total mercury (Hg) content in fish species most consumed by Manaus residents and surrounding communities, Amazon region. The results obtained for total Hg in natura and after the three types of preparation (roasted, cooked and fried) for 12 fish species showed a significant Hg concentration variation. In the present study the cooked and frying processes resulted in higher Hg losses for Pacu, Pescada, Jaraqui, Curimatã, Surubin and Aruanã fish species, most of them presenting detritivorous and carnivorous feeding habits. The higher Hg losses in the roasting process occurred for Sardinha, Aracu, Tucunaré, Pirapitinga, Branquinha and Tambaqui fish species, most of them being omnivorous and herbivorous fish species. Some micronutrients (Ca, Fe, K, Na, Se and Zn) in fish species in natura were also determined in order to perform a nutritional evaluation regarding these micronutrients.Artigo IPEN-doc 14503 Use of Cathorops spixii as bioindicator of pollution of trace metals in the Santos Bay, Brazil2009 - AZEVEDO, J.S.; FERNANDEZ, W.S.; FARIAS, L.A.; FAVARO, D.I.T.; BRAGA, E.S.Artigo IPEN-doc 09770 Reconnaissance of submarine groundwater discharge at Ubatuba coast, Brazil, using sup(222)Rn as a natural tracer2003 - OLIVEIRA, J.; BURNETT, W.C.; MAZZILLI, B.P.; BRAGA, E.S.; FARIAS, L.A.; CHRISTOFF, J.; FURTADO, V.V.Artigo IPEN-doc 09395 Aplicacao de sup(222)Rn como tracador de descarga de aguas subterraneas na regiao costeira de Ubatuba, Sao Paulo2002 - OLIVEIRA, J.; BURNETT, W.C.; FARIAS, L.A.; MAZZILLI, B.P.; SARAIVA, E.S.B.; FURTADO, V.V.Artigo IPEN-doc 11728 Assessment of daily intake of Hg and some essential elements in diets of children from the Amazon region2006 - FARIAS, L.A.; FAVARO, D.I.T.; MAIHARA, V.A.; VASCONCELLOS, M.B.A.; YUYAMA, L.K.O.; AGUIAR, J.P.L.; ALENCAR, F.J.Artigo IPEN-doc 13026 Preparation of PtSn/C and PtSnNi/C electrocatalysts using the alcohol-reduction process2008 - SPINACE, ESTEVAM V.; FARIAS, LUCIANA A.; LINARDI, MARCELO; OLIVEIRA NETO, ALMIRPtSn/C electrocatalyst with Pt:Sn molar ratio of 50:50 and PtSnNi/C electrocatalyst with a Pt:Sn:Ni molar ratio of 50:40:10 were prepared by the alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent. The electrocatalysts were characterized by EDX, XRD, TEM and cyclic voltammetry. The electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry using the thin porous coating technique. PtSnNi/C electrocatalyst showed a superior performance compared to PtSn/C electrocatalysts in the potential range of interest for direct ethylene glycol fuel cell. Artigo IPEN-doc 13191 Enhanced electro-oxidation of ethanol using PtSn/CeOsub(2)-C electrocatalyst prepared by an alcohol-reduction process2008 - OLIVEIRA NETO, ALMIR; FARIAS, LUCIANA A.; DIAS, RICARDO R.; BRANDALISE, MICHELE; LINARDI, MARCELO; SPINACE, ESTEVAM V.PtSn/CeO2–C electrocatalysts were prepared by an alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reduction agent and CeO2 and Vulcan Carbon XC72 as supports. The electrocatalysts were characterized by EDX and XRD. The electro-oxidation of ethanol was studied at room temperature by chronoamperometry. PtSn/CeO2–C electrocatalyst with 15 wt% of CeO2 showed a significant increase of performance for ethanol oxidation compared to PtSn/C catalyst. Preliminary tests at 100 °C on a single cell of a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) also confirm the results obtained by chronoamperometry.
