X- ray experimental set-up for in-vitro nail test
    2023 - ZAMBONI, C.B.; GIOVANNI, D.N.S.; ALMEIDA, M.R.; TODO, A.S.; SABARA, F.; RODRIGUES JUNIOR, O.
In this investigation, the elements Ca and S were evaluated in a single nail clipping using compact and portable X-ray spectrometer model X-123 SDD with Ag target. Experimental conditions for current, voltage and excitation time were investigated. These analyses can be useful for a variety of applications, including nutritional and medical diagnosis, such as, the evaluation of bone dysfunctions by measurement of Ca (bone decalcification) and S for nutrition evaluations (collagen production). This analysis offers some benefits comparatively to blood and serum analyses, such as, non-invasive collection, fast analyses (minutes) and low cost. In addition, nail clippings are simple to obtain, easy to store, and easy to transport. This pilot study show a positive expectation for clinical application using in-vitro nail test.

Ions concentration in blood samples of SJL/J dystrophic mice strains using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
    2019 - GIOVANNI, D.N.S.; ALMEIDA, M.R.; ZAMBONI, C.B.; METAIRON, S.; BALDUINO, K.N.; SUZUKI, M.F.; BUENO JUNIOR, C.R.
Star This study proposes an investigation of ions in whole blood of the dystrophic animal model SJL/J (mice strain with dysferlin protein deficiency) and in the control group (C57BL/6J) using the Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry technique. The comparison between control and dystrophic mice results shown an increase in blood for P, S, K and Fe (p < 0.05) while a decrease in Ca (p < 0.05). This elemental analysis will contribute to evaluate the best diagnostic, care and treatment procedures, for the Progressive Muscular Dystrophy.

Sulfur status in judo athletes by XRF
    2019 - ALMEIDA, M.R.; ZAMBONI, C.B.; GIOVANNI, D.N.S.; AZEVEDO, M.R.A.
The human biomonitoring, measurement of chemical and/or their metabolites in human fluids, is an important tool for assessing the health condition of subjects, included athletes. In this study, sulfur levels were investigated in blood of judo athletes using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technique. Twenty athletes participated of this study. Two groups of athletes were selected: judo with a balanced diet with multivitamin/mineral supplements consumption and judo with diet not controlled. These data were compared with the control group (subjects of the same age but not involved with physical activities). There was a significant increase of S levels in athletes with diet not controlled. These data can be useful to a well-planned nutritional proposition that can contribute to better performance of athletes.

Evaluation of iron in blood of athletes by the EDXRF technique
2019 - ALMEIDA, MATEUS R. de; ZAMBONI, CIBELE B.; SILVA, DALTON G.N. da; AZEVEDO, MARIA R.
The aim of this study was evaluate Fe in blood of athletes from different modalities (judo athletes, cyclist and long distance runners) by X-ray Fluorescence methodology using portable equipment, as an alternative for clinical practice. The study showed the practicality and efficacy of using this methodology for successive clinical evaluations, during the preparation period of competitions, providing data that help in the elaboration of a balanced diet, as well as contribute to the proposal of new clinical evaluation protocols. In addition, the results emphasize the need to adopt differentiated diets for adequate iron intake as a function of sports activity.
