In this pilot study, the Atomic Force Micro- scopy (AFM) is evaluated to visualize and quantify structural and morphological changes in enamel surfaces irradiated by laser. The AFM was chosen not only because its high resolution and high contrast imaging capa- bility but mainly due to the fact that quantitative information can be directly obtained from the samples in their natural state (no need of dehydration, coating, staining or even evacuation). Samples were extracted from human and bovine teeth and only the bovine samples were irradiated with pulses of a CO-TEA laser. Images of (25 x 25) pum? and (10 x 10) jtm? of scanning area were obtained from random points of the sur- faces and prismatic areas (with holes) and interprismatic enamel were easily visualized in unlased samples. The mean diameter and the apparent depth of enamel holes and the RMS roughness (Rq) were directly mea- sured. Lased surface showed typical changes due to fusion and solidification and greater roughness in com- parison to unlased surface. Results indicate that AFM is an excellent tool for the proposed task.Resumo IPEN-doc 08034 Ensaios iniciais de caracterizacao de esmalte dentario utilizando microscopia de forca atomica2000 - MIYAKAWA, W.; ZEZELL, D.M.; PASSARO, A.M.P.; SALVADORI, M.C.B.S.; RODRIGUES, N.A.S.Artigo IPEN-doc 05852 Medida do tempo de vida do nivel sup(7)Msub(7) do uranio via espectroscopia optogalvanica de dois fotons1995 - NERI, J.W.; DESTRO, M.G.; RODRIGUES, N.A.S.; SCHWAB, C.; MIRAGE, A.; FUCHENG, L.Artigo IPEN-doc 05851 Medida do tempo de vida via absorcao de 2 fotons em lampadas de catodo oco.
