Nuclear security culture requires every individual’s awareness, ability and commitment to identify and mitigate potential and real security threats at a nuclear facility. Despite existing security regulations and protocols developed by international and state advisory bodies, security threats and incidents remain ongoing concerns that merit further critical analysis. A particular area of concern that has not been addressed in prior literature in the field is the role of societal culture in influencing security related beliefs and behaviors. For this reason, a diverse group of nuclear security experts and organizational culture experts were convened to discuss these issues, share their experiences and, ultimately, to identify novel insights to further enhance nuclear security culture across operations. This panel, consisting of diverse nuclear security experts, will lead conversations on research-based insights drawn from existing literature on both nuclear security culture and societal cultural differences. The goal of this panel will be to share the experiences and results from the team’s research to best prepare those from the global nuclear industry to best account for cultural factors which influence the site’s nuclear security culture.
